About Great Circle Distance Calculator

The Great Circle Distance Calculator finds the shortest path between two points on Earth using the Haversine formula, then reports the initial bearing, final bearing, and midpoint coordinates. Enter latitude and longitude pairs, add up to twelve waypoints to build a multi-leg route, switch the total between nautical miles, kilometers, or statute miles, and see every leg drawn on an interactive map.

It is built for navigators, sailors, pilots, and anyone planning long-haul routes or estimating sea passages. The tool is free and runs entirely in your browser, so the coordinates you type never leave your device and nothing is uploaded. Copy the midpoint or export the whole route as GPX to load into your chartplotter or GPS.

How to use

  1. Type the start and end coordinates as 'lat, lon' in points A and B.
  2. Click Add waypoint to insert intermediate stops, up to twelve total.
  3. Pick your unit: nautical miles, kilometers, or statute miles.
  4. Read the total distance, initial and final bearings, and midpoint.
  5. Check each leg on the map and adjust waypoints as needed.
  6. Copy the GPX or download it to import into your navigation device.

Frequently asked questions

Are my coordinates sent to a server?+

No. All calculations happen locally in your browser, so your latitude and longitude values stay on your device and are never uploaded.

What coordinate format should I enter?+

Use decimal degrees in 'lat, lon' order, for example '37.97, 23.72'. Southern and western values are negative.

Why does the bearing change from start to finish?+

A great-circle path constantly curves relative to true north, so the tool shows both the initial bearing at the start point and the final bearing arriving at the destination.

Can I export my route to a GPS or chartplotter?+

Yes. Use Copy GPX or Download GPX to get a GPX 1.1 file containing your waypoints, ready to import into most navigation software and devices.

How many waypoints can a route have?+

You can add up to twelve points. Distance and bearings are calculated for each leg and summed into a total for the whole route.
