About Readability Score Checker

Readability Score Checker analyzes your text and reports Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch–Kincaid grade level, and Gunning Fog index, then offers suggestions for clearer writing. It solves the common problem of prose that reads as denser or more advanced than your audience can comfortably follow, giving you concrete numbers instead of guesswork.

It is built for writers, editors, marketers, teachers, and developers checking docs or copy against a target reading level. Because it is free and runs entirely in your browser, your text is never uploaded to a server and stays private on your own device.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your text into the input box
  2. View the Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch–Kincaid grade, and Gunning Fog scores
  3. Compare each score against your target reading level
  4. Read the suggestions for shortening sentences and words
  5. Edit your text and recheck until the scores fit your audience

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded anywhere?+

No. All scoring happens locally in your browser, so your text never leaves your device and nothing is sent to a server.

What is the difference between the three scores?+

Flesch Reading Ease gives a 0–100 score where higher means easier reading, while Flesch–Kincaid and Gunning Fog both estimate the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text.

What is a good readability score?+

It depends on your audience, but a Flesch Reading Ease of 60–70 or a grade level around 7–8 is often recommended for general web content.

Why do my scores change with sentence length?+

All three formulas use average sentence length as a key factor, so shorter sentences and simpler words lower the grade level and raise the ease score.

Does it work offline and cost anything?+

The tool is free to use, and once the page has loaded it can score text without any further network connection.
